UNPAID carers are to receive greater financial support as a reward for the “vital role” they have played during the Covid pandemic.
There are thought to be thousands of local residents fulfilling unpaid roles as carers by looking after relatives or other loved ones.
Now the Scottish Government has announced a £4million support package to help them cope with the “many additional pressures” they face while the coronavirus crisis continues.
The bulk of the cash will go to carers centres but there will also be funding to expand services for unpaid carers looking after someone with dementia, as well as paying for breaks for families with disabled children.
Social Care Minister Kevin Stewart said: “Unpaid carers play a vital role in society.
“The Scottish Government has always been committed to providing them with the support and extra help they deserve.
“The local services and third sector organisations that have supported carers during the pandemic have been exceptional. I’m pleased to announce this funding to allow them to continue their work.”
