A RENFREW man hurled abuse at police who were asked to remove him from his drinking crony’s flat.

Richard Graham, 27, called officers “pigs” and told them to “f*** off” during the incident on January 15 this year.

Fiscal depute Monique Cooney told Glasgow Sheriff Court: “At 10.50pm, police were instructed to attend the flat due to an ongoing disturbance.

“On arrival, there was no disturbance. However, the flat owner asked police to instruct the accused to leave, as he wanted to go to sleep. He said he wanted to make no complaint but wanted him out.

“Police escorted the accused out and he left to go home.

“At 11.15pm, an anonymous report was made to police regarding a man in the common close banging on the door and shouting and swearing.

“Police attended and the accused shouted ‘f*** off, you pig b*******.’ He was asked to calm down. He replied ‘I don’t give a f***, f*** off.’

“There was no reply to caution and charge.”

The court heard that Graham had spent all of his money on drink and had no way of getting home to Renfrew from the flat in the Drumchapel area of Glasgow.

His lawyer told Sheriff Vincent Lunny: “He was hopelessly drunk, yet again. I would invite you to impose a supervision order with a condition he must attend alcohol recovery and drug services.

“When he tries to stop on his own, he takes seizures. It’s not the case where he can say ‘I can’t have another drink.’

“I think it’s very important he co-operates with services. He knows drink is affecting every aspect of his life. He has one outstanding matter – passing Valium to his pal in the street.”

Sheriff Lunny gave Graham the chance to turn his life around.

He said: “The report certainly seems to have some degree of optimism this can be tackled if we go about it the correct way. It’s support rather than punishment required here.”

Graham was placed under two years’ supervision and will attend a review in three months’ time.
