A RENFREW schoolboy has won a gold medal at a prestigious kickboxing competition.

Jamie Bickerton, 10, won all five of his fights in the under-35kg knockout tournament at the WKC Scottish Championships on Sunday.

The event, which took place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, was the Newmains Primary pupil's debut contest.

Jamie's proud aunt Yvonne Britton said the primary six pupil was "ecstatic" about his victory.

She told The Gazette: "Jamie was excited in the run up to the competition but very nervous on the day until he stepped onto the mat, he was calm and composed.

"All of his friends and family are really proud and he has shown great dedication and commitment to his training.

"He was awarded a huge medal and was delighted to take it into school to show his classmates."

Jamie regularly attends RMKB Fitness & Martial Arts, in Manse Street, Renfrew, where he started his training in June last year.

Yvonne added: "Jamie would like to thank his coaches and teammates. We are all excited to see what the future holds for Jamie."
