WREATHS were laid in Renfrewshire today to mark International Workers Memorial Day.

Commemoration events took place at the Workers Memorial Cairn in Robertson Park, Renfrew, and at the flagpoles outside Renfrewshire House, in Paisley.

International Workers Memorial Day takes place annually to remember those who have been killed, injured or made ill by their work, such as those who delivered vital care and services during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mark Ferguson, branch secretary of Unison Renfrewshire, said the theme for this year's event was to "make safe and healthy work a fundamental right."

He told The Gazette: "Unison calls on all employers to ensure that working conditions are safe and that staff providing essential services in dangerous conditions are adequately equipped.

"Our members need to know they are working in conditions that are safe and healthy - years of austerity have certainly not helped.

"Today we stood united in a moment of reflection on the importance of this International Day of Remembrance."
