PUPILS at a Renfrew school are hoping their summer production of a hit musical will satisfy the appetite of those starved of live entertainment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Trinity High adaptation of Lionel Bart’s coming-of-age musical Oliver! can be seen from Monday, June 13, to Thursday, June 16.

Based on the 1838 novel by Charles Dickens, the production is the result of eight months of hard work by pupils and staff, with twice-weekly rehearsals becoming the norm for those involved.

English teacher Catriona Duggan, who is the show’s director, told The Gazette: “Trinity High is all about the community and we wanted a crowd-pleaser to bring a bit of joy back to everyone.

“Every year group is involved and they are doing the acting, choreography, lighting, the tech stuff and all of the costumes.”

The school’s latest summer production follows their Greatest Showman-themed event in 2019 and Sound of Music performance in 2017.

Catriona said: “There’s such an energy and feeling of celebration around the whole thing and we can’t wait to have people back in the school after what has been a really difficult two years.

“The kids have worked hard to make the show as entertaining as possible. I’ve been stunned at how good they are and what they’ve managed to achieve.

“They’ve not been able to sing in school for the last two years, so it’s really nice that they can now.”

The opening show on June 13 will be a special performance exclusively for key workers, who have been invited to attend the event free of charge.

Catriona said: “We talk a lot about the community and thought it would be really nice to perform a complimentary show for key workers who have kept us going all the way through the pandemic.

“We’ve distributed about 250 tickets around various hospitals, community groups and local businesses, as well as visiting the police station and fire station.

“It’s been heartwarming to see people’s reactions, as many have loved the gesture and a few were in tears when the kids gave them their tickets.”

Performances will be staged at 7pm each night and tickets cost £5 (standard) and £3 (concessions).
