An appeal has been made for volunteers to help in breathing new life into an old community garden in Linwood.

Councillor Audrey Doig and local residents are looking for helpers to help return to the spot off Brediland Road to its former glory.

The SNP representative spoke of the “great potential” of the site, which she said had once been given a makeover by a gardening programme on the BBC.

Councillor Doig said: “Recently I was emailed by a couple of Linwood constituents, Mr and Mrs Morrison, who had noticed that off Brediland Road, at the entrance to the On-X sports hub, was an unused garden which obviously at one time had been well tended and cared for.

“I went to meet them and we looked at the garden site which had some sheds and seated areas.

“On investigation I learned that this Linwood Community Garden had once been a project of the former Linwood Community Education Centre, which prior to the construction of the On-X had been sited there.

“On speaking to other constituents I learned that at one time, presumably years ago, the Community Garden had been given a makeover by no less than the BBC’s ‘Beechgrove Garden’.

“I would love to see this area brought back to life for so many different reasons.

“People are so aware now of the need to have a quiet place where they can meditate or practice mindfulness, also we are all being encouraged to reduce our carbon footprint and grow our own food, and of course there is the growing Men’s Shed movement.

“So, I see great potential here.”

People who are interesting in helping restore the garden have been urged to get in touch with John Morrison.

Councillor Doig added: “John and his wife are looking for other local residents in Linwood to build a team of volunteers to help rejuvenate the Linwood Community Garden to its former glory and I will do everything I can to help them and to encourage that.”
