Concerns have been raised about the impact a new housing development could have on schooling and the community in Renfrew.

Architects, acting on behalf of Bellway, have submitted a blueprint to Renfrewshire Council for 80 flats and 39 houses on vacant land next to Laymoor Avenue and King’s Inch Road.

A mix of apartment properties and detached, semi-detached and terraced homes have been proposed for the 5.8-acre brownfield site.

However, residents are worried about the prospect of more new housing in the area having a detrimental effect on already-stretched services.

Lindsay McKillop, secretary of Renfrew Community Council, said developers need to do their “homework” and check the number of pupils in local schools.

She added: “My concerns are the impact on the community, the impact on the traffic, but the most prominent one is the schooling for young people.

“If they’re putting family homes in there, which they clearly are, where are the children going? Have they made provision in school for them?

“They’re bursting at the seams in Kirklandneuk Primary School. They’ve got an extension built but it’s nowhere near enough for what they’re dealing with.

“The contractors or housebuilders should be building a school.”

Documents handed to Renfrewshire Council by George Buchanan Architects say the Bellway development will be “attractive to a wide range of households,” adding that 27 per cent of the homes would be “affordable.”

Ms McKillop has stressed the importance of social housing being a key aspect of any planned developments.

She said: “The lack of social housing, the lack of housing that people can afford in Renfrew, and the number on the waiting list is horrendous.

“We need accessible, easy housing for people.”

The planning documents say feedback received during the consultation period has been “taken into consideration” by Bellway and “incorporated into a revised design proposal where appropriate.”

Councillors will consider the plans in due course.

Bellway was contacted for comment.
