Police are hunting a thief who targeted cars in Renfrew late at night.

The suspect broke into one vehicle in Paisley Road at around 10.45pm on Saturday and stole valuables worth several hundred pounds.

He also tried to break into a Vauxhall Corsa in the same street a short time later.

Police said the thief, who was foiled by the Corsa owner, is in his 20s, around 5ft 10ins tall, slim and was wearing black clothing, including a hoodie with a distinctive logo on the arms.

A spokesperson added: "He was challenged by the owner when he tried to open the car door and then made off.

"The owner said the suspect's speech was slurred, as if he was under the influence of drink or drugs.

"A male of a similar description was also seen to have entered the other car.

"It looks as though his intention was to take from the vehicles, rather than steal them."

Anyone who has any information is asked to call the police via 101, quoting incident number 4215.
