Some of Scotland’s top piping talent will be aiming to blow away their rivals later this month as they compete in a new event in Renfrewshire’s social calendar.

The inaugural Renfrew Pipe Band Competition will be held at the town’s Robertson Park on Saturday, July 23.

It will feature performances by pipers and drummers from across Scotland, with lots of family fun also lined up.

Those who go along to the free event, which runs from noon until 5pm, will be able to take part in aerial workshops, browse through stalls at a farmer’s market and enjoy some tasty treats at a food village.

Experts from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association will be judging the bands on their performances across various grades.

As well as enjoying the performances during the day, spectators can also watch a 'march past' at 5pm, followed by a prizegiving ceremony.

Chieftain at the event will be poet Shaun Moore, who is the Tannahill Makar for Renfrewshire.

He said: “It’s a big honour to have been asked to be Chieftain at the first pipe band competition in Renfrew.

“As a member of the local creative community, I enjoy making links with performers from other disciplines and sharing in the great work we all do to showcase talent in our local area and encourage wellbeing and pride in our communities.

“I know how big a day it is for the competitors and how much preparation they'll have put in and I’m looking forward to joining them for what I’m sure will be a fantastic day out.”

Visitors should note there will be no public parking at the event. However, free parking will be available a short walk away at Trinity High School, in Glebe Street.

Public transport to Robertson Park is also available, with a number of bus stops conveniently located in Inchinnan Road and Paisley Road.
