INNOVATIVE pupils at Renfrew High School were honoured for their eco-friendly efforts at the 15th annual Social Enterprise Academy Awards.

Several youngsters from the school attended the Assembly Rooms, in Edinburgh, to showcase their creative business concept at a special social enterprise marketplace.

Pupils from Renfrew High’s eco-committee wanted to help prevent food waste, so decided to create and publish a Zero Food Waste Cook Book.

With their profits from their book, they plan to set up a scheme to compost the school’s food waste and help the planet further.

Seonaid Forrester, biology and science teacher at Renfrew High, told The Gazette: “We are very proud of the achievements of our eco-committee.

“They have worked really hard on their Zero Food Waste Cook Book and have made plans for how to reduce Renfrew High’s food waste in the future.

“They are passionate about improving the environment and creating school initiatives which support that.”

A total of 56 schools from across Scotland were celebrated for their social enterprise skills, with 25 of them taking part in the Edinburgh event.

Shirley-Anne Somerville, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, joined the celebration to show her support and congratulate young people on their success.

She said: “Social enterprise schools play an extremely important role in the development of young people as we recover from Covid-19.

“By establishing a social enterprise in their school, pupils are engaging in the practical and creative skills required to run a business while making a difference to causes they truly care about.

“They are gaining in confidence and improving their own wellbeing, as well as that of their peers and local community.”
