A NEW group being launched in East Renfrewshire aims to use the power of a cuppa to smash the stigma surrounding women’s health.

The Menopause Café will operate in Neilston, offering support to local women who are keen to talk about their experiences of what many people still view as a taboo subject.

Gatherings will take place each month and be open to women of all ages.

The initiative is being organised by Jennifer Carroll, of the Neilston Development Trust.

She told the Barrhead News: “We are delighted to be bringing this pop-up monthly café to Neilston.

“Having spoken to several locals, I think it will prove to be as popular as other menopause events popping up around the country.

“It’s time to drop the idea of the menopause as a taboo topic and, instead, talk openly about it, while hopefully having a few laughs along the way.”

Scotland’s first Menopause Café was launched in Perth in 2017, with a number of others being established in towns and villages across the country since then.

It was the brainchild of Perth resident Rachel Weiss, who was keen to bring women together so they could offer each other some support.

Rachel said: “The Menopause Café is aimed at women of all ages who would like to talk about the menopause, to share their stories, experiences and questions, all made that little bit easier with tea and cake.

“Unfortunately, many people feel that they should just ‘get on with’ the menopause, with some never talking to their friends or family about it.

“People can come along and just listen or join in on the discussions, hopefully leaving with a clearer sense of the impact of the menopause on those who are experiencing it, alongside their families, friends and colleagues.”

The menopause can cause symptoms such as anxiety, mood swings and hot flushes.

However, there are steps women can take to help with these symptoms.

The first gathering at Neilston’s Menopause Café will take place on Tuesday, August 30, from 6pm to 7pm.

There is no need to book in advance but anyone who would like more information can contact Jennifer by sending an email to Jennifer.carroll@neilstontrust.co.uk.
