A MAN found dozens of bullets as he was cleaning up part of a river in Paisley.

Paul Richardson and a fellow volunteer were spending their Sunday morning clearing the White Cart Water of litter and dumped items.

However, the pair came across a plastic tub near Abbey Bridge.

The Gazette:

Paul said: "We found a plastic container that was covered in duct tape. I decided to have a look inside. I opened it up and there were two bags of ammunition.

"I think these were for an automatic machine gun or an automatic pistol.

"When we found them we decided to have a scoot about in case there was a firearm. We then contacted Police Scotland."

Paul was asked to hand the bullets into the nearby police station at Mill Street, which he did.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a number of bullets found in the White Cart Water near Bridge Street in Paisley shortly after 11am on Sunday, March 5.

“The items have been handed into police.”

The Gazette:

Paul, who owns Calamity Kayaking, regularly spends his time cleaning the river which runs through Glasgow and Paisley.

On Sunday, items including bikes, street cones and tyres were removed.

He previously said: "The most unusual thing we’ve found is probably a finger, which was just at the mouth of the river in Renfrew. We just put it in a bag and handed it into the cops.

“We’ve also found a lot of knives and phones.

“I cleaned Stanley Castle Reservoir in Paisley. I found a Tennent’s can in there with a picture of Carole Smillie on it, so that tells you how long that’s not been cleaned. It’s a shambles."

We reported last week how two youngsters were left shocked after finding a handgun in a canal in Kirkintilloch.

The 10 and 12-year-olds were magnet fishing when they discovered the firearm.

Police collected the gun and said it will be sent to a lab to have the rust removed and check for a serial number.
