A KNITTING group in Houston has created a crown-themed "postbox topper" to celebrate the King's coronation.

The outdoor yarn display has been placed on top of a postbox in the village's Magnus Road by members of 'Crafty Friends' to mark the occasion.

The group has put similar colourful creations on postboxes in Houston for previous festivities, such as Easter, Christmas and Hallowe'en, over the past few years.

Lorna Cairns, who is a member of Crafty Friends, said their latest coronation-themed display had proved popular with locals.

The Gazette:

She told The Gazette: "We have got very good feedback about it.

"We call them postbox toppers and I don't know if they've got an official name.

"We've made just one coronation topper, so it's unique and we are pleased with how it looks."

Residents in Houston have been full of praise for the new postbox topper, with many of them congratulating Crafty Friends on the finished product via Facebook.

One wrote: "Well done, looks lovely and a lot of work."

Another added: "Love it! I bet it took ages to knit, but it's fabulous"

The Gazette:

The 12 members of Crafty Friends meet at the Carrick Centre, in Houston, several times a month to make the postbox toppers, as well as enjoy a hot drink and a blether.

Lorna said: "We started off during lockdown and we are all involved in making the toppers, whether it's knitting, sewing, crocheting, or being involved in the planning or designing stages.

"We're not all based in Houston, as we've also got ladies from Bridge of Weir, Bishopton and Johnstone.

"I think the toppers help bring the community together, as a lot of kids walk along Magnus Road when they go to school and they love seeing them.

"It's amazing how many children stop and take photographs of them.

"Everybody seems to notice the toppers, from the youngest to the oldest members of the village."
