Residents in Elderslie are being encouraged to volunteer with a community group to help make the village look that little bit brighter.

For the past five years, Evergreen Elderslie has added some extra colour to the village by planting more flowers and shrubs.

Among the areas that have been spruced up are the flowerbeds opposite the village hall and a traffic island on Main Road, near the top of Canal Street.

The group is now focusing their attention on the area around Elderslie's old railway station opposite the village's golf club.

Linda MacMillan, one of the volunteers at Evergreen Elderslie, told The Gazette: "We are taking part in Keep Scotland Beautiful's It's Your Neighbourhood campaign.

"It's a non-judged event that's basically about trying to make the area that you live in look a bit better with plants and flowers, and also doing some litter picks and things like that.

"It was Elderslie Community Council that got the grants for the planters and it kind of grew arms and legs following that, so that's when we decided to create the gardening group."

Last year, volunteers asked Wallace Primary pupils to help them create the group's name and emblem in order to register with Keep Scotland Beautiful's initiative.

Linda said: "They have a school garden so I've been working with them on that, and I've also been working with the local afterschool service Chatterbox Childcare.

"We also have community networks that meet at Elderslie Village Hall on Fridays and we've got quite a few different groups in the village involved in what we're doing as well."

Evergreen Elderslie, which currently has around 10 members, is hoping to get more volunteers involved with their projects.

Linda said it had been "very rewarding" to help improve the village's environment, as well as get positive feedback from local residents.

She added: "It's nice to take a bit of pride in the area you live in and it's also so good for your mental health.

"As well being outside in the fresh air and you get to meet lots of people who stop to chat about what we're are doing.

"No experience is required to take part and even just half an hour would make such a difference to us."
