Family members of a "passionate" basketball coach who died last year are organising a special event in his memory.

Robert Taft, who lived in Paisley for most of his life, helped countless local youngsters get into sport during a long association with his beloved basketball.

We previously reported that he died in February 2022 at the age of 65 following a three-month battle with an aggressive form of cancer.

Robert's niece Gillian O'Neill described her uncle as "a character" who was "full of laughs all the time."

The Gazette:

She told The Gazette: "He absolutely loved basketball and was very passionate about what he did.

"He was still playing right up until a few months before he was diagnosed and was a big joker who had a great sense of humour.

"It was heartbreaking when he passed away."

Robert's loved ones are now planning to organise a charity event to raise funds for two causes close to their hearts.

Proceeds will be split evenly between drugs rehabilitation service Jericho House, in Robert's home town of Greenock, and Paisley's Accord Hospice, which provided Robert with palliative care during his final days.

The event will take place at the Cruden Hall, in Greenock, on Saturday, August, 26, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced at £12.50 per person and there will be a DJ, hot food service, raffle and party games.

Gillian's husband Mick, along with Robert's nephews Stewart Taft and Martin Orr, will also be taking on the West Highland Way to raise funds for Jericho House and Accord Hospice.

The trio has so far raised more than £1,200 on a JustGiving page set up for the fundraising challenge, which is set to take place on Saturday, September 9.

Gillian said: "Both charities were really good and know my aunt, Robert's wife Joan, is still receiving ongoing support from them, so we just have nothing but praise for them.

"Everyone is invited to the charity event if they want to come along and support it and any donations for the raffle would be greatly appreciated."
