An author has told of how her passion for archaeology and re-enacting historical events has helped her write fantasy fiction.

Claire Casey, 40, has recently released her novel Raven's Fall, which is the second in a planned trilogy of books.

The latest novel continues the story of protagonists Rowan, Brenna, Warner and Cara, who are fighting to stop those who seek to destroy magic.

Claire, who grew up in Neilston and now lives in Paisley, said her love of history and travelling had been a key influence on her creative pursuits.

She told The Gazette: "I've always enjoyed reading fantasy, as it's just a great way to let your imagination run wild.

The Gazette:

"I really enjoy myth and legends, so I've found that to be quite inspirational and it gives me quite a lot of ideas for writing.

"I also love travelling and, when I was an archaeologist, it took me all over Scotland and England."

Claire has worked on a number of archaeological sites, including a Neolithic settlement site in Orkney.

The former St Luke's High pupil is now pursuing a career as a full-time author, with American fantasy writer George R. R. Martin serving as one of her main inspirations.

As well as working on novels, Claire has published poetry collections, books of short stories and flash fiction.

In her spare time, she also volunteers with the Glasgow Vikings Re-enactment Society, which takes part in events across Scotland.

Claire has performed as a number of characters at locations such as Dumbarton Castle, where she has been able to show off her archery skills with a long bow.

She said: "Taking part in re-enactments gives you the chance to travel around Scotland to see different places and I learn a lot as well.

"Essentially, it is about educating people about the north of Scotland and the Vikings in a fun and entertaining way.

"I would say that if you enjoy adventure or mythology, reading fantasy books is a great place to start and hopefully something like my Devilsrise trilogy will be right up your street."
