Organisations in Renfrewshire developing projects to provide food to the community will land a share of £25,000 in funding.

Councillors have approved awards to a number of applicants who bid for sums of up to £4,000 from the community food fund.

The decision was made at Wednesday’s leadership board after an officer panel, which consisted of representatives from the council, Engage Renfrewshire and the health and social care partnership (HSCP), recommended 11 applications were given the green light.

These included initiatives from Johnstone Castle Learning Centre, Renfrew YMCA, Renfrewshire Effort to Empower Minorities, Local Energy Action Plan, Renfrewshire Rainbow Buddies, KLAS Care C.I.C, Ferguslie Seniors, Barnardo’s Threads, Active Communities, Glenburn Resource Centre and Star Project.

A report, which was considered at the board, said: “The community food fund aims to support organisations based in Renfrewshire that are developing or running projects to provide food to our local community.

“As agreed at leadership board on June 14, 2023, additional funding of £10,000 from Fairer Renfrewshire funding was allocated to top up the remaining £15,000 available within the community food fund.

“It was subsequently agreed that the fund would reopen following the summer recess.

“Grant guidance was updated during the summer period and applications opened in August, with funding of £4,000 available per application.

“The fund closed on August 28, 2023, and all applications received were considered by an officer panel comprising of representatives from the council, Engage and the HSCP.

“The panel has recommended that 11 applications are approved, totalling £25,000.”

Officers will now make arrangements to award the grant funding to the successful applicants “as soon as possible”.
