A former bar and restaurant in Paisley is set to be given a new lease of life in the shape of a hotel.

Plans to turn 42 New Street into an 11-unit aparthotel have been approved by Renfrewshire Council.

The building was sold before going to auction earlier this year for an undisclosed amount.

The town centre site is now facing transformation after planning permission was granted by the local authority.

A report on the decision said: “This application seeks planning permission for change of use of a public house to eleven service apartments on New Street, Paisley.

“The applicant also proposes to make associated alterations to the front elevation of the property.

“The application site fronts a road to the north and is bound by a mixture of residential and commercial properties on all sides.

“Although a single unit internally, externally the application site consists of what were two separate properties.

“The taller of the two properties is a three-story sandstone tenement while the smaller is a two-storey building finished in smooth cream render.”

The site is located within the town centre conservation area.

According to the council, the two-storey section of the building is C-listed.

The report continued: “The apartments would each be self-contained with their own internal entrances, with external access taken from a single doorway on New Street. Each unit would each feature a kitchen and bathroom.

“The apartments would be advertised on booking websites, with bookings only open to those over 21 years of age.

“Maintenance and cleaning would be provided by contractors and would operate in a manner similar to a hotel.”

As the property would be used for short-stay accommodation, the council does not believe the potential for noise disturbance to be “so great that it would warrant refusal” of the plans.

Therefore, it was ruled that the proposal is in line with the provisions of the development plan.
