Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Gavin Newlands has accused the UK Government of "completely abandoning people in Scotland" following the King's Speech.

The speech, which sets out the programme of legislation that the UK Government intends to pursue in the forthcoming parliamentary session, was described as "a missed opportunity" by the SNP politician.

Mr Newlands said: "This was a speech completely empty when it came to real action to help households being hammered by the Westminster cost-of-living crisis.

"This is a Government that has run out of steam, matched by a Labour opposition who have no ideas, no vision and no alternative to the failed ideology that has brought the economy to its knees.

"This was a speech that saw no action on the rigged energy market. No action on soaring food prices, which have risen over 13% in the last year alone. No action on a fairer tax system. No action on the real investment these islands need for the future. And no action on the powers the Scottish Parliament needs to make our country fairer and wealthier."

Mr Newlands claimed that the efforts of the Scottish Government to address the cost-of-living crisis were being "hampered" by the UK Government.

He added: "The speech was a missed opportunity for the UK Government to do something positive for a change – instead we are left with a sinking ship and millions of households being dragged down by a system that has all but abandoned them."

Speaking after the King’s Speech, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said: "The first King’s Speech in more than 70 years was a very special moment, and I was honoured to be in the Chamber for it.

"This is an ambitious UK Government legislative programme, which delivers for people in Scotland and right across the whole of the UK.

"Our programme builds on the Prime Minister’s priority to grow the economy, fully secure the benefits of Brexit, and build the most competitive and supportive environment for businesses to capitalise on new technologies.

"Our new oil and gas licensing scheme will boost our country’s energy security, and protect vital jobs in the North East of Scotland.

"These measures will help ensure that the whole of the UK is more prosperous, more innovative and more secure."
