Police have issued an update about their four-day investigation into the death of a man in Renfrew.

We previously reported how emergency services raced to Newmains Road at around 2.30am on Sunday, November 5, after a man was found "unresponsive".

A 27-year-old, who has been named locally as Andrew Lees, was rushed to hospital but tragically died a short time later.

His death follows the alleged murder of 52-year-old Alastair Campbell, who was found dead in the town's Renfield Street on Monday, October 30.

The Gazette:

As of Wednesday afternoon, a police cordon remained in place at the scene of Sunday's incident, with mounted police also seen patrolling the area.

Superintendent Douglas Falconer told The Gazette: "We are aware of concerns in Renfrew recently following the death of Alastair Campbell and the unexplained death in Newmains Road.

"Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with Mr Campbell’s death and enquiries are ongoing into the death of the man in Newmains Road.

"We have stepped up patrols in the town and I would encourage members of the public to approach officers with any concerns you may have."

Councillor Jim Paterson said he had received confirmation from police that the cordon would be removed as soon as their investigations were completed.

The Gazette:

The Renfrew South and Gallowhill representative said: "My condolences go out to the friends and family of Andrew at what will be an extremely difficult time for them.

"I have spoken with Police Scotland regarding the cordon that is currently in place and although they could not commit to a timescale, they provided assurances that this would be removed as soon as their investigations concluded."

Meanwhile, the nearby Renfrew Leisure Centre has remained closed following the incident.

In a Facebook post published on Monday morning, a spokesperson for OneRen said: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, Renfrew Leisure Centre is closed.

"We will update customers when we can reopen. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."
