Renfrewshire Liberal Democrats have chosen Grant Toghill as their representative in the upcoming general election.

Mr Toghill, who is a software engineer based in Bishoption, and local youth group leader, will represent the Lib Dems in Paisley and Renfrewshire North.

He said: "Renfrewshire is a place I am so proud to call my home. Growing up in Erskine for 26 years before moving to live in Bishopton, I have seen my community grow.

"However, huge challenges, such as the cost of living crisis and over a decade of Conservative government means that it’s time for change.

“We have two governments that have been in power too long. Thirteen years of the out-of-touch Conservatives trashing our economy, as well as 16 years of the SNP who have lost sight of supporting our local services, taking responsibility for their actions and seem to have run out of ideas.

“People here want change and a positive vision at this crucial moment. The Liberal Democrats and I want to give people across Renfrewshire a fair deal. That means real action on issues like the cost of living and climate change, and from ensuring affordable housing and services to suit local needs to real action to clean up our politics and make our country a better place to live.

“It’s time for change, and I want to be a strong, hard working local voice for our community. If you want an economy that works for everyone, investing in the future of our country, and someone who puts the community first then back me as your Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate in Paisley & Renfrewshire North."

Mr Toghill previously stood for Bishopton, Bridge of Weir, & Langbank in the 2022  local elections.

He has campaigned on issues such as the need for a new Dargavel high school and for more support to prevent a local veterans’ care home from closing.

Speaking on Mr Toghill’s candidacy, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton, said: "Grant is a fantastic candidate and will be a strong local voice for the area.

"The Scottish Liberal Democrats have seen a huge resurgence in recent years, showing that we can take seats off both the Conservatives and the SNP."

MSP Cole-Hamilton encouraged voters to support the new candidate.

He added: "Scottish Liberal Democrats are resilient and we will keep fighting for our communities, so even if you’ve never voted Lib Dem before, take a chance on Grant in the general election, and see what we can do for you."
