Renfrewshire residents are being urged to engage in a nationwide effort to combat Scotland’s litter crisis.

The annual #SpringCleanScotland 2024, organised by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, starts on March 15 and runs until April 28.

More than 30,000 people in Scotland participated last year, equipping themselves with litter pickers, bags and gloves, and contributing positively to their neighbourhoods.

Barry Fisher, chief executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We’re so excited for #SpringCleanScotland 2024 to begin this week, and it would be fantastic for as many people as possible from Renfrewshire to get involved.

“We know 85% of people agree that they want to see more efforts to prevent litter in their area. It starts with us.

“No longer can we wait for someone else to pick up the litter we might walk past every day – so we are inviting everyone to organise a litter pick with friends, family, workmates or alone, or to join an event registered on our Clean Up Scotland map.

“Every action, however small, will help us reverse the litter emergency.”

Councillor Michelle Campbell, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said said everyone has a role to play to improve the places they live in.

She added: "As a council, we’re working hard to enhance our own street cleaning, gulley clearing and litter picking.

"Through Spring Clean and our local Big Spring Clean campaign, which both take place in March and April, we are also supporting volunteers who want to be more active in keeping their neighbourhoods clean.

"We know local people can make a real positive impact in changing peoples’ attitudes towards littering, so the more people who take part the bigger the impact.

"I’d encourage everyone to get involved in this year’s Spring Clean, as no matter how small the action, we can all make a positive difference to our environment which will contribute to a bigger national response.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful are collaborating with Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Wales Tidy to support the Great British Spring Clean.
