An NHS volunteer, praised as being "unfailingly generous", has received a prestigious award.

Rehabilitation support volunteer Marie Phillips was named Volunteer of the Year at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Excellence Awards for the Clyde Sector.

Marie, who started volunteering at the Royal Alexandra Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic, works with Allied Health Professionals in orthopaedics to provide support and encouragement to patients with mobility and recovery exercises.

She has also dedicated her time to listening to patients, helping to uplift their mood, and is said to provide "incredible support at the RAH", and is popular with both patients and staff.

Also celebrated at the ceremony was senior charge nurse Angela Thomson, who works on Ward 10 at the Paisley hospital.

She was awarded Leader of the Year for the Clyde sector.

Praised for her "unparalleled leadership", particularly during the pandemic, Angela has "demonstrated true commitment" to high-quality patient care and is said to undertake any task "in the interests of patients".

She went to great lengths to provide special support to help a patient get married while she was rehabilitating from an illness.

Meanwhile, a unique showcase of teamwork was observed in the RAH Stroke Multidisciplinary Team, who were named Team of the Year.

The group had successfully implemented a thrombolysis service at the hospital, improving the speed of patient access to the Acute Stroke Unit.

Melanie McColgan, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde director for the Clyde Sector, said: "We are immensely proud of all of the staff and volunteers who work across our sites.

"Our annual sector awards are an opportunity to recognise the incredible dedication shown to patients, their families, and colleagues.

"We hope the event goes some way to demonstrating how much we value the positive contribution they make."
