An application for planning permission has been submitted to build six padel tennis courts at Xsite Braehead.

The proposal would see the development, along with fencing, canopy, lighting and associated works, erected on part of the car park at the location on Kings Inch Road.

It has been put forward by XPE Braehead and would see a "currently under-utilised" part of the XSite car park renovated.

The application involves a 2.6 hectare area to the north-east of the existing building with five courts arranged in a north-west to south-east direction and one court in a north-east to south-west direction.

Aerial view of proposed development (Image: Renfrewshire Council planning portal) Padel is a mix between tennis and squash and has become increasingly popular across Scotland, according to the proposal.

It is usually played in doubles on an enclosed court one-third the size of a tennis court surrounded by walls of glass and metallic mesh, which the ball can bounce off but can only hit the floor once before being returned.

Points are scored when the ball bounces twice in the opponent’s field.

The application is currently awaiting a decision from Renfrewshire Council.

Residents have until June 3 to submit comments on the proposal.
