A giant interactive game is set to transform towns and villages into a real-life game board.

Beat the Street returns to Renfrewshire this autumn, encouraging people of all ages to get active and explore their local area.

The free six-week challenge will run from September 10 to October 22, turning communities including Bridge of Weir, Johnstone and Lochwinnoch into part of the fun.

Participants can walk, cycle, run, wheel or scoot between special sensors known as Beat Boxes to earn points and win prizes.

Last year’s challenge saw Renfrewshire participants collectively travel more than 118,000 miles during the competition.

This year, organisers are hoping to beat that total.

Councillor Michelle Campbell, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s infrastructure, land and environment policy board, said: "We’re thrilled to welcome Beat the Street back to Renfrewshire.

"It’s a brilliant way to inspire sustainable habits, bring people together and rediscover our beautiful parks, streets and green spaces.

"As well as helping people make healthier lifestyle choices, such as walking to work or taking the scenic route home, it also supports improvements in air quality, reduces congestion and strengthens connections within our communities.

"To everyone taking part, have fun, enjoy exploring and let’s see if we can beat our previous total.

"Every step counts."

To play, players must simply tap their game card or app on a Beat Box, travel to another within an hour and earn points for their school, workplace, community or charity team.

The further they travel, the more points they collect.

Primary schools will distribute game materials directly to pupils, while others can collect a card from distribution points listed at tinyurl.com/ytptys82.

Leaderboards will track progress, with categories for schools, community groups and workplaces.

Anyone aged 13 or over can use the free Beat the Street app to play.

Beat the Street Renfrewshire, commissioned by Renfrewshire Council and funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, is designed to encourage everyday active travel.

The programme, delivered by Intelligent Health, aims to promote healthier lifestyles, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen community ties.

More information about the scheme can be found on the Beat the Street website.
