A woman who struggled with health issues for years is now using her experiences to support other people.

Lisa Fulton opened Muse Lab Spa in Hillington at the start of 2024 as a way to help women navigate the hormonal transitions they experience throughout their lives.

The entrepreneur from Paisley explained that she was inspired to start the business as she felt she had a “duty” to take care of others after going through her own difficulties with perimenopause.

Lisa said: “When I was 38, I started to experience what I thought was mental health. I was always very confident, and then I started to feel really anxious and did not want to go out of the house.

“I went to the doctor and they said straight away, ‘you’re far too young for it to be anything to do with perimenopause or menopause’, so I was sent to a psychiatrist for a decade.

“I could not learn anything new because I couldn’t retain information, and I couldn’t finish a conversation because I’d forget my train of thought.

“It became so bad that I just hid in my house. In 2020, I had an urge to do cold water dipping, and honestly, for the first time in a decade, I could feel emotion.

“It was the most powerful I’d ever felt. I’ve been a massage therapist for 30 years and decided to get back in amongst it.

“I went to the Scottish Enterprise and told them what I wanted to do. It [Muse Lab Spa] was all going to be female nurture through hormone depletion from puberty to post-childbirth through to perimenopause and post menopause.

“My main goal in life is to help and nurture all females as they navigate any sort of mental or physical issues related to hormonal imbalances.”

Lisa offers a variety of services at her spa that focus on wellness, including a Japanese Head Spa Retreat, Menomuse – a specialised menopause massage, and her own brand of spray tans.

She explained that alongside the treatments, she also provides personalised support and guidance for those experiencing hormonal transitions.

In September 2025, just under two years after opening, Muse Lab Spa was named the ‘Best Day Spa in Scotland’ at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards (SHABA).

Lisa told the Glasgow Times she was so overwhelmed to have been recognised on a national level.

She added: "Your clients vote for you first of all, then they [SHABA] send in secret shoppers to look at your social media, your client feedback, and reviews.

“I was crying when they announced I’d won. I was just like ‘wow’, I could not believe that I had come through this full journey and at the end they recognised me as being the Best Day Spa in Scotland.

“I’ll never get over it. My place is so small, but it provides a space to spend a couple of hours taking care of yourself.

“We do spa parties for 12 to 16-year-olds with food and treatments. It’s not about introducing young girls to beauty treatments; it’s really introducing young girls to what to do if you’re not feeling right.

“I do lots of chats. If you come in for the menomuse treatments, we have a half an hour chat on your hormones, how you’re feeling, and more.

“If it’s the post-natal treatment, you can come in with your wee one. I’ll go and collect elderly clients from their homes and pick people up from the train station down the road to make sure they can come in.

“I’m living my purpose, I just love what I’m doing, and I’ll never do anything else. I think I have been through so much, and I can empathise with others.

“My journey is to show women your life isn’t ending when you go through menopause, it’s really just beginning.”
