A mural depicting Scotland player Scott McTominay's goal, which helped seal World Cup qualification, has appeared in Paisley.

Scotland have reached the tournament for the first time in 28 years, Scott McTominay's overhead kick sent Scotland on their way before goals from Lawrence Shankland, Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean to claim a 4-2 victory at Hampden.

Just a week on from the historic game, a mural of McTominay's acrobatic overhead kick has been painted on a wall in the town.

The kick was a world-record-breaking feat as McTominay, who plays club football for Italian side Napoli, leapt to a staggering 2.53 metres.

The height surpassed the previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo who's iconic overhead kick in the Champions League in 2018 for Real Madrid clocked in at 2.38 metres.

The mural is the work of local artist Michael McMenemy, @bellacosse_arts, who spoke with the Glasgow Times about the immediate desire to immortalise the moment.

He said: "As soon as the goal happened, I knew I wanted to paint it with urgency.

"That night, I picked a spot and did a rough painting against the weather with little supplies and very Incognito.

"Before I could finish it, the mural had started to gain popularity online."

The now-completed work on Andrews Street has already been shared with local groups and received a great response from the community.

The goal has been dubbed "Scotland's best goal ever", and we reported earlier this week that there are calls for a mural near Hampden, where the goal was scored.

Residents in Mount Florida have sparked an idea to immortalise Scott McTominay's overhead kick in Scotland's game against Denmark, which saw them qualify for the World Cup next year.

The mural would be on the gable end of a tenement just a few hundred metres from the west stand goal at Hampden Park Stadium, where the thundering acrobatic shot billowed the net.

Mount Florida resident Karen Gall, who was in the stands for the game, posted about the mural in a community group amid the celebrations.

Architect Karen explained: "The idea about a mural overlooking the primary school is one that I've had for a while.

"I'd always thought a mural would be amazing because what a great thing overlooking the playground, it would totally brighten it up, and I'd also thought that something football related would be great given how close it is to Hamden.

"When I saw the images of McTominay's goal after the game, I thought it would be perfect for a mural.

"That and the fact it was arguably Scotland's best goal ever.

"I just think it's the perfect spot, you know, above a playground where football is played 5 days a week, inspiring generations."

Michael said he would be up for taking on the challenge of creating a larger version at that spot.

He said: "I would jump at the opportunity to install a larger and more finessed version."
