A major airline has extended its flights from a Scottish airport before the service has even started.

The seasonal flights have been extended further into the autumn.

United Airlines has revealed that its flights between Glasgow Airport and its New York hub, Newark Liberty International Airport, will now run until October 24 rather than September 23 as originally planned.

The flights, which mark the return of United to Glasgow Airport for the first time since 2019, were announced in October last year and will start as planned on May 9.

In an exclusive interview with The Herald this week, the chief executive of Glasgow Airport’s owner expressed hopes that the United Airlines service will eventually become year-round, on a wide-body jet.

Kam Jandu, chief executive of AGS Airports flagged as a priority in terms of transatlantic ambitions “making New York year-round and on a wider…aircraft”.

The United flights are launching on a narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft.

He said this week of the United flights win announced last autumn: “We have demand because we have the biggest city in Scotland. If you look at the greater Central Belt area, we have a significant catchment, and that gave us the sad opportunity to promote the fact that... we are one of the few unserved long-haul markets out of the east coast of the US.

“So, pulling all these things together, we were able to get United on board.”

He revealed that Glasgow Airport is talking to American Airlines about the potential for flights to Philadelphia, expressing hopes of “some traction” with this airline and flagging the possibility of such a service operating from 2027 or 2028.

Mr Jandu said of American Airlines and Glasgow Airport: “They know Glasgow has the market and the opportunity. It is on their list. It is just a question of when it gets to the top of their list.”

He added that the airport was also “to a lesser extent” having a conversation with US airline Delta.
