West Dunbartonshire's MP has shared his 'outrage' over an 'excessive' increase to drop-off charges at Glasgow Airport.

Douglas McAllister says the decision to raise the fee from £6 to £7 penalises passengers who rely on the airport and who travel from his constituency, particularly when there is 'no realistic transport alternative'.

It was announced by airport bosses earlier this week, that from Tuesday, February 3, the charge was to increase by £1 for a 15 minute stay. If this time limit is exceeded, another £1 will be added to the price.

McAllister says he has now written to the CEO of AGS Airports, Mr Kam Jandu, who operates the Glasgow transport hub, calling for them to reconsider their decision.

In his letter, he said: "The rise from £6 to £7, due to be implemented this month, is excessive and will have a negative impact on everyone who uses the airport, including residents of West Dunbartonshire.

"While I understand that rising operating costs must be balanced with the needs of customers, this new drop-off charge seems outrageous. It is an unfair penalisation of passengers and visitors who rely on the airport."

When announcing the increase, bosses at the airport admitted it was not a "popular decision".

They explained that the reason for the rise was because "it is important that the airport remains competitive, and all money raised serves to strengthen our connectivity and help to attract new routes."

However, McAllister argues more public transport options are required in order to proceed with such a raise.

In addition, he says that the new charge is in line with Heathrow Airport in London which offers a variety of alternative transports.

McAllister added: "Having more than tripled in cost since its introduction in 2017, this new £7 charge for a drop-off is unwarranted, particularly when many passengers have no realistic transport alternative.

"Unlike other major UK airports, Glasgow lacks a direct rail link and therefore drop-off parking is often the only viable alternative.

"As you’re likely aware, traffic congestion is increasing around the petrol station and nearby hotels as drivers attempt to drop off passengers outside the designated zone. With higher charges, this issue is likely to worsen, negatively affecting local businesses and undermining the efficiency of the parking system.

"The increased charge brings costs in line with Heathrow Terminal 5, an airport with vastly superior public transport infrastructure. Glasgow Airport is a vital transport hub for my constituents and for the tourism sector, and it is essential that it remains accessible."
