A 116-year-old veterinary practice in Paisley is getting a major modern makeover.

Abbey Vets, which first opened in 1910, is currently undergoing a large-scale refurbishment to update its Canal Street premises and meet growing demand for high-quality animal care.

The expansion is being funded by VetPartners, a UK and Europe-wide veterinary group, and has included the demolition of the rear of the building to make way for a purpose-built extension.

Rachel Clark, practice manager at Abbey Vets, said: "We’re replacing the rear of the building with a brand new, purpose-built extension, designed and built to the highest quality that will enable us to provide the best possible care of our patients and an excellent service for our clients.

"We have simply outgrown our current building which is starting to fall into disrepair, and we want to expand our service because of the extra demand from clients.

"The building will be completely transformed into a fresh and modern practice and, while there is a lot of upheaval, it is going to be really worth it."

The improvement project aims to upgrade facilities for both patients and clients and provide a better working environment for their 41 vets, veterinary nurses, receptionists, and support staff.

Once complete, the renovated site will feature two operating theatres, five consultation rooms (up from four), and an extra consult room that will provide a private space for grieving owners who have had their pets put to sleep.

A large preparation room, dental suite, x-ray room, isolation kennels, a laboratory, farm examination room, and staff facilities are also included in the plans.

To improve the experience for animals and owners, the design includes separate waiting rooms for cats and dogs to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as a disabled access ramp.

The refurbishment is being carried out in two phases, with the first already underway.

Once the extension is complete, work will begin on upgrading the rest of the building.
