An easyJet flight declared an emergency over Scotland and was forced to divert into Glasgow Airport in Paisley after failing to land at Inverness.

The service from London Gatwick, flight EZY847 operated by an Airbus A319, issued a squawk 7700 emergency code while en route north on Friday afternoon.

The code is reserved for emergency situations and immediately alerts Air Traffic Control and other units that the aircraft is in distress.

Data from tracking site FlightRadar24 shows the plane left Gatwick just before 2pm, attempted to land at Inverness, then flew south, circled above Dalwhinnie and eventually diverted safely into Glasgow Airport at around 3.55pm.

Passengers and crew were unharmed and the plane came to a safe stop at the city's airport.

A spokesperson for easyJet told The Herald: "Flight EZY847 from London Gatwick to Inverness today diverted to Glasgow due to a technical issue.

"The pilot performed a routine landing in Glasgow where the aircraft will be inspected by engineers, and we will be doing all we can to ensure passengers can continue their journey as soon as possible.

"Safety is our highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers' guidelines."
