A speed camera is set to be installed on a busy part of the M8.

It comes as part of roadworks on the Junction 28A-A737 link road [St James Viaduct], which has a lane closure in place until Thursday, May 21.

The closure is required to allow essential work to the west expansion joint on the bridge.

Traffic delays of up to 15 minutes are expected at peak AM and PM times.

To allow for the removal of the lane closure, two nights of work will be undertaken under a total closure of the eastbound carriageway of St James Viaduct on the nights of Wednesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 21.

Traffic will be directed to take the A737 slip to the St James Interchange and join the M8 Eastbound via the Junction 29 on slip.

Following the removal of the lane closure, bridging units will be in place over the expansion joint which will create a small ramp in the road at the West abutment.

Vehicles traveling over these plates should not exceed 30mph. To protect traffic travelling over these units, a 30mph speed limit will be in place on the eastbound carriageway of St James Viaduct once the lane closure is lifted.

This speed restriction will be enforced by average speed cameras.

During the speed restriction journey times will increase by an expected two minutes.

Weekly inspections of the bridging plates will be undertaken on Thursday nights, within a total closure of the bridge, starting on the night of May 28 and running until mid-July 2026 when permanent replacement of the expansion joint will take place.

Further updates will be provided in June.
