The Scottish Government has announced that temporary speed restrictions will be enforced on the A737/A738 St James Viaduct, from August 14 to November 16.
The decision follows an order placed under sections of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, citing potential danger to the public as the reason for the changes.
Affected areas will include the stretch of the A737/A738 St James Interchange – Kilwinning – Hawkhill Trunk Road at the St James Viaduct, from its junction with the A761 in a generally north-easterly direction to its junction with the M8 eastbound, covering a total distance of around 2600 metres.
The eastbound off slip to the St James Interchange/Roundabout, from its commencement and point of divergence from the A737 main carriageway, to a point 180 metres prior to the St James Interchange/Roundabout, a distance of around 385 metres, will also be affected.
The new speed regulations mean that vehicles will need to slow down to 30mph on the aforementioned sections of the road.
The A737/A738 St James Interchange – Kilwinning – Hawkhill Trunk Road at Linwood, which is the A761 on slip road to the A737 from the point it diverges from the A761 to the point where it merges with the A737 eastbound, will also be subject to the 30mph speed limit.
This stretch covers a total distance of 600 metres or thereby.
Meanwhile, a 50mph speed restriction will be enforced on the A737/A738 St James Interchange – Kilwinning – Hawkhill Trunk Road at Linwood, from its junction with the Barrochan Road in a generally north-easterly direction to a point 750 metres after its junction with the A761.
This covers a total distance of 3750 metres or thereby.
The Barrochan Road on slip at Johnstone, from the point it diverges from the Barrochan to the point where it merges with the A737 eastbound, covering a total distance of 400 metres, will also be subject to the 50mph speed limit.
The order will only apply to parts of the road indicated by appropriate traffic signs.
Prohibitions imposed by the order will not apply to any vehicle being used in an emergency for fire brigade, ambulance, police or coastguard purposes, or a vehicle being used for carrying out the works.
No speed restriction imposed by this order applies to vehicles falling within regulation 3(4) of the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) (Variation and Amendment) Regulations 2011, when used in accordance with regulation 3(5) of those regulations, or vehicles being used in an emergency for coastguard purposes.
