In 1164, Somerled, King of the Isles, alongside an army of 15,000 fought and battled against a small army who were loyal to King Malcolm IV of Scotland, just outside the town of Renfrew.

The small army were able to defeat Somerled — signalling a significant moment in Scotland’s history, and which prevented Renfrew and Glasgow from being ruled over by those loyal to Somerled.

Now Gavin Newlands has written to the local authority and urged them to do more to remember the historic moment.

The MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North is looking to publicise this event more within the town of Renfrew.

He told The Gazette said: “The Battle of Renfrew was a significant historical event for the town but out-with those who take an active interest in the town’s history, very few people are aware of it.

“It was a David Vs Goliath battle and thankfully prevented King Somerled from conquering Renfrew and Glasgow.

“Learning about our town’s history is extremely important. It allows us to understand who e are and how we got here, and the Battle of Renfrew is an event that should be known more widely.” “Fantasy TV shows like ‘Game of Thrones’ show the interest that exists for medieval battles. Therefore, it’s important — from both an educational and tourist point of view — that we take advantage of the revitalised interest that exists for our history.” Last year, The Renfrewshire Local History Forum hosted a conference to mark the 850th anniversary of the Battle of Renfrew.

Mr Newlands continued: “I’m not asking for any changes to be made to the school curriculum but local children should be provided with the opportunity to learn of this famous battle.

“In preparing the ‘City of Culture’ bid for Paisley, the Council should also look at recognising the historical events from some of our surrounding towns.” “I hope that Renfrewshire Council accepts the contents of my letter in the cordial spirit that it was sent with, and look at ways to publicise this important historical event.” Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall said: “We recognise the importance of the Battle of Renfrew as a hugely significant event in Scotland’s history. At the 850th anniversary in October 2014, the battle was commemorated with a special conference organised by Renfrewshire Local History Forum, which the council supported.

“Renfrewshire’s history is central to our ambitious regeneration plans and we are looking at all ways to recognise that unique historical wealth.

“While the bid for UK City of Culture status is obviously focussed on Paisley, those plans are being taken forward with all of Renfrewshire in mind, and the entire area stands to share in the benefits.”
