A RENFREW woman is getting her kilt on and stepping out to honour her grandmother.

Philippa Park is taking on the Glasgow Kiltwalk to raise money for Alzheimer’s research after watching her 96-year-old nan Marjorie Rustage suffer from the disease for almost a decade.

The corporate sales manager will walk 23 miles on Sunday, April 29, to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The charity has invested more than £6.7million in research in Scotland in an attempt to find a cure for the disease.

Philippa said: “My nan now spends her life in a care home, she cannot do anything for herself and sleeps all day.

“She no longer knows who I am, she doesn’t know I’m her granddaughter, but she’s still the same loving person, so if you go and see her she still wants to give you a hug and a kiss.”

Philippa is no stranger to fundraising, having taken part in three Kiltwalks in 2015 and a two-and-a-half-day trek around Arran.

Unfortunately, she suffered hip, thigh and ankle injuries that forced her to take a break, but she is now eager to get back into her stride.

Joining Philippa on the walk will be best friends Nikki Grant and Tina Harrigan, plus Tina’s daughter Shannon.

Philippa said: “I’m really looking forward to the Glasgow Kiltwalk. The atmosphere is great and you get a lot of support.”

Philippa has raised more than £350 so far and her employer, Arnold Clark, which is one of the sponsors of Kiltwalk, has agreed to match her total.

Kyle Lockhart, Alzheimer’s Research UK fundraising officer for Scotland, said: “We hope Philippa’s story will inspire more people to sign up to take on a Kiltwalk and raise vital funds.”
