AN elderly woman has been knocked to the ground and robbed of her handbag in a supermarket car park.

Police Scotland said the incident occurred at around Around 7pm on Wednesday at Morrisons on Kirk Road in Wishaw.

Officers raced to the scene after a man approached the 74-year-old woman and stole her belonging.

Members of the public managed to retrieve the handbag, however, the suspect then made off on foot down Kirk Road.

He is described as being in his forties, around 6ft in height and of slim build.

He was wearing black jogging bottoms, a black hat with a logo on the front and black trainers with a white sole.

Officers are checking CCTV and speaking to those in the local area.

Detective constable Gary Lipscombe, Wishaw CID, said: “Robbing an elderly woman of her handbag is absolutely despicable. It is vital we trace the person responsible.

“We are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward and contact us.

“Morrisons would have been busy at that time of night, so think back: were you in the area? Did you see anyone running from the car park?

“We urge anyone with information to come forward.”
