BARRHEAD High girls team have made in through to the final of a national tournament.

The school, where Scotland manager Alex McLeish studied, is set to play where he is now based at the home of Scottish football, Hampden Park.

With more than 75 per cent of all Scottish schools taking part, the Coca-Cola sevens has become the biggest schools football tournament in the country.

PE coach at the school, Ronnie Lowrie, is no stranger to cup success, having lifted the Scottish Junior Cup, among many others, while a keeper at Pollok.

He has also played senior for Queens Park, Rangers and spent seven years at Alloa, and is looking forward to the final as much as any during his playing days.

Ronnie said: 'The team last year went through the qualifying stages without losing a goal and were devastated to go out on goal difference by just one goal.

'They are determined to go one better this year, although the standard has been a lot higher and results have been close, a lot of 2-1s and 1-1s.' At each stage of the competition, the team has received a coaching session from an ex-professional player and their day at Hampden will be superb.

Coach Ronnie explained: 'They have been coached by Gary MacKay, Chic Charnley and Tosh MacKinlay and on the day of the final they use the actual dressing rooms that the senior teams use.

'It promises to be a great experience as they also get lunch and a guided tour of Hampden on the day of the final, which is June 9' On the way to the final, Barrhead High have beat several local rivals, including Johnstone, Renfrew, St Benidict"s and Eastwood high schools •Coca-Cola 7s final - Barrhead High v St Ninian"s High at Hampden Park on Saturday June 9.
