RENFREW Golf Club’s Craig Pirie faced off against Greenock’s David Macfarlane in the final of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Match Play Championship.

The final saw youngster Pirie face off against his elder rival at Paisley Golf Club.

Two Paisley members had made it to the semi-finals but Pirie saw off Chris Guthrie one up whilst Macfarlane saved a bit more energy having been taken to the fourth extra hole by Brian Adam.

The quality of golf in the final came as no surprise to those watching on.

Pirie’s card showed nine straight pars but he was two down at the turn.

Macfarlane sank an outrageous putt for a birdie three at the third — then knocked down his second to within inches of the flag at the sixth.

Macfarlane then dropped a shot at the 10th to let Pirie back into the game — but bogies at 12 and 13 had McFarlane three up and cruising towards the title.

Pirie responded at 15 for his first birdie of the day to reduce the deficit but having caught the rough Pirie could not get home in two at the par five 16.

Mcfarlane got his four to win three and two over his opponent.

David Macfarlane becomes the most successful Renfrewshire golfer in terms of Match Play Championships — having previously won at East Renfrewshire (2000), Fereneze (2004) and Eastwood (2007).

He had previously shared the record of three wins with the late, great Barclay Howard.
