RENFREW moved up to second in the Super League First Division table with a 3-1 win over Largs Thistle at New Western Park on Saturday.

After winning promotion two seasons ago and consolidating their place in the league last year, few would’ve placed Colin Clark and Martin Ferry’s side among the top contenders for promotion.

That view was seemingly strengthened in the summer when Frew lost several key players.

But Renfrew have flown out the traps, Saturday’s win was their fifth in seven league games and only unbeaten Petershill have amassed more points than Renfrew so far.

Former Clydebank defender Jamie Lyden made his Renfrew debut in the match and put in an assured display.

Striker Darren Jones put Renfrew a goal up in the first half before Thistle levelled the tie. With the clock ticking towards the final 15 minutes, Cameron Clark curled in a terrific free-kick to edge Frew in front once again.

Scott Morton wrapped the points for Frew with a late strike.

Renfrew host Shettleston on Saturday, Table-topping Petershill are nine points ahead of Renfrew but have played two games more. Kick-off at New Western Park is at 2pm.
