A HOST of athletes from Renfrewshire are celebrating today after being named as part of Team Scotland for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia.
Twenty-year-old Jack Carlin from Paisley is one of 17 cyclists in the squad joining the likes of Olympic champions Katie Archibald and Callum Skinner and Glasgow 2014 medallists Aileen McGlynn, Louise Haston and Neil Fachie.
Kelvin Cham and Cara Kennedy, also from Paisley, have made it into the gymnastics squad alongside world and Olympic medallist Dan Purvis and reigning British floor and vault champion Frank Baines.
Meanwhile the men's hockey team is full of players from Renfrewshire including Kenneth Bain, Alan Forsyth, David Forsyth, William Marshall and Lee Morton, who are all from or stay in Paisley, and Michael Bremner, who hails from Kilbarchan.
Ella Gibbons, who lives in Renfrew, has been named in the 12-strong netball team, while Adam Hall, who lives in Paisley, has made the badminton squad.
Scottish Hockey CEO David Sweetman said: “We’re incredibly proud to announce such exciting hockey squads for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and I’d like to offer my congratulations to all the athletes selected.
"This announcement is a great testament to all the hard work and dedication shown by each athlete in the squads.
“Our players and staff are fantastic ambassadors for hockey. We look forward to cheering them on as they compete in Australia and we wish the whole of Team Scotland the very best of luck for April’s Games.”
