JACK Ross last night walked away from the chance to join Barnsley so he could concentrate on winning promotion with St Mirren.

The 42-year-old spoke to the English Championship club this week about becoming their next manager but, after some soul-searching, has opted to stay in Paisley.

It is understood that Saints are now poised to offer Ross an improved deal as they seek to secure his services for the foreseeable future.

St Mirren chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick said: “We are delighted with the news that Jack remains committed to St Mirren Football Club.

"Jack has built something special here and has really pulled everyone together in the right direction.

"It is excellent news for the club and all focus is on trying to meet our targets for the season.”

Barnsley, who are currently in the relegation zone, would have been in a position to offer Ross a vastly-increased salary but he was not convinced this was the right move for him at this time.

St Mirren, who face second-placed Livingston in their latest league match tomorrow, have opened up a 14-point lead at the top of the Championship.

Ross has previously told how he is "loving" life at St Mirren, who lured him to Paisley from Alloa Athletic in October 2016.

Last summer, he rebuffed an approach from Scottish Premiership outfit Dundee to commit his future to the Buddies.
