ST Mirren boss Oran Kearney says Anton Ferdinand has impressed as he hopes to get a deal done before tonight’s game against Celtic.

The 33-year-old centre half, who played over 30 times for Southend last season, has been training with the Paisley club this week.

Even if the Hoops encounter comes too early for the former West Ham stopper, Kearney hopes to get it over the line.

He said: “We’re in negotiations at this point in time and we’re keen to do something. It’s just whether or not we can get there.

“It would be nice to have him available for tomorrow night, if it doesn’t come over the line in that time we have a lot of other games to play as well.

The Gazette:

Oran Kearney was unveiled as St Mirren manager earlier this week

“He’s acquitted himself well and he comes across as a really nice fella.”

The former Coleraine boss has been handed a tough start against Champions Celtic.

But Kearney can’t wait to sample the atmosphere at a packed out Simple Digital Arena as he welcomes fellow Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers.

He continued: “It’s poetic that it’s started with this fixture. The Champions at home, I think it’s the perfect start.

“Motivation, Friday night, under the lights here. If the players can’t get up for that and aren’t ready for it, then I don’t know.”
