SKIPPER Stephen McGinn says St Mirren’s late point against St Johnstone could be massively important in their fight to preserve their Premiership status, writes Kyle Gunn.

Danny Mullen’s 90th minute stunner from the edge of the box rescued a point for the hosts after Chris Kane gave Tommy Wright’s men the lead with 11 minutes remaining.

And the midfielder praised the character shown by his side in their bid to avoid the drop.

He said: "It was a crazy last 20 minutes. When you look at how the scores went, I am glad I wasn't watching it live.

"It was just an amazing feeling at the end. It would have been a real sore one to lose, but it's the type of game we've been losing all season. Psychologically, it was a massive point for us.

“It's something we have been guilty of too many times this season by not seeing out the point.

"There wasn't much happening in the game and we both missed chances, but when they scored we just thought that at this stage of the season we have got nothing to lose and went for it and thankfully Danny has hit an absolute wonder goal. It was brilliant seeing it from behind because it was in all the way. It was euphoric at the end."

The Buddies face a trip to Motherwell this weekend and, although he was unused substitute in 2007, McGinn recalled a memorable encounter when Saints scored three goals in half an hour to stay up at Dunfermline’s expense.

Ross McCormack hit a double, one either of the break, to put the Steelmen in a seemingly unassailable position.

Then Saints gaffer, now technical director, Gus MacPherson made a half time double switch with both Billy Mehmet and John Sutton coming on and getting the goals to preserve the club’s Premiership status.

The 30-year-old wants a similar outcome but he admits he would like a bit less drama this time around.

He continued: "If you had offered me a win and a draw from the first two games after the split I would have snapped your hand off. We're really happy with the start to the split but we have still got a lot of work to do.

"It was one of the best days I have had at St Mirren even though I wasn't involved. We were dead and buried that day and and something crazy happened in the last 30 minutes. I would take another result like that but maybe not in the same way it happened that day!"
