THORN ATHLETIC clinched the Caledonian Premier League title at the weekend to round off a remarkable double.

The Johnstone side led the pack for most of the season but they were confirmed as champions following a 2-1 victory over Wishaw AFC on Saturday after goals from Shaun Kelly and skipper Ryan Crawford.

It wasn’t a vintage display from Thorn but they were just delighted to get over the line with a game to spare having looked nervy in some recent matches, including a tense 1-1 draw with defending champions Dumbarton Academy last week.

Caledonian League President Graeme Robertson was on hand to present the magnificent trophy to captain Crawford, sparking joyous celebrations.

It joins the William Turner Challenge Cup in the club’s trophy cabinet and now the pressure is off ahead of this weekend’s final match of the season against Dalziel at the McMaster Sports Centre.

Manager Johnny McEwan said: “I’m absolutely delighted for everyone connected with the club as we’ve been getting closer and closer over the past few years.

“The players have worked their socks off in the past 12 months and it’s great that they have been rewarded for their efforts.

“It’s a hugely competitive league with some very strong teams so it’s a massive achievement for the club.”

McEwan took over the reigns from James Donnelly when he stood down just a few months into the campaign. And he paid tribute to his predecessor and the work of his fellow coaches Alan Muir and Jason Henderson.

He added: “We knew we had a strong squad that James had brought together over the past few years and he put a lot of the building blocks in place.

“We have a good mix of experience and youth and hopefully they can go from strength to strength now.”
