Ilkay Durmus’ strike gave Jim Goodwin his first win Premiership victory as St Mirren boss.

The Turk’s early goal gave Saints the 1-0 win in the torrential Paisley rain and and ensured Derek McInnes' side headed back up the road with nothing.

Goodwin’s men welcomed Aberdeen for their first home league game of the season after losing to a Scott Allan strike at Easter Road last weekend.

Meanwhile McInnes’ side were hoping to put Thursday’s Europa League defeat against Rijeka in Croatia behind them and make it two Premiership wins from two after coming from behind to beat Hearts at Pittodrie seven days ago thanks to a late volley from Ryan Hedges.

The hosts took the lead on 12 minutes when after good work from Magennis, Durmus buried an effort into the bottom corner to bag his first goal for the Buddies.

They also had good chances to double their advantage through close range headers from Durmus and Gary MacKenzie.

Hedges and Connor McLennan had efforts saved and cleared for the Dons but it wasSt Mirren who led 1-0 at the break.

Curtis Main had an early second half strike over the bar but it was only part of the onslaught that would follow.

Main kicked the ball out of Vaclav Hladky’s arms but his goal was disallowed.

Then Aberdeen would have a strong penalty appeal waived away on 61 minutes when Hedges cross looked to hit Ryan Flynn on the arm.

They huffed and puffed and had a strike from Funso Ojo late on but Saints held on for the win.

A delighted Goodwin said: "Somebody said a few weeks ago that we are soft. But I think the boys have shown that they are anything but soft.

"It was terrible conditions today and Aberdeen are a very good team and a very physical team. They put the balls in your box all the time and we had to stand up and be counted. But each and every one of my player did that.

"But to a man we were excellent. There was not one player had a below-par performance today.

"The players have been outstanding and they are taking on board what we are telling them.

"We could have got a point at Easter Road and today I’m delighted to get the three points."
