Johnstone Burgh boss Jamie McKim has urged football bosses to introduce a winter break after his team suffered yet another league postponement.

Burgh’s abandoned trip to Lugar Boswell Thistle on Saturday was the most recent call-off in a season blighted by postponements for McKim’s men, who have turned out just 11 times in the league so far this season – an incredible 10 games fewer than current league leaders Vale of Leven.

The only game in West Region League Two not to be given the go-ahead, the Ayrshire club cited an “unplayable” pitch to justify their call – a move which has left McKim astonished.

“The continuous postponements are getting beyond a joke now,” he told Gazette Sport. “It really is bitterly disappointing to see another one called off.

“We were the only game in the league postponed, while there were also games quite close to Lugar given the go-ahead.

“That’s not the first time that has happened this season, it’s an ongoing problem and has happened three or four times so far now.

“I really do believe it will need to be looked at in the near future by the powers that be.

“I still genuinely don’t know the real reason why that was called off on Saturday, all we were told was that the pitch was ‘unplayable’ but I don’t know what made it unplayable.

“Once we learned of the news, we made the trip down to Muirkirk for their home match against Thorniewood. The funny thing is that game went ahead just fine and their pitch looked perfect.

“McKenna Park is right beside Lugar’s park, so we were really disappointed by that.

“I’m not going to throw mud or start making claims, it’s just disappointing.”

With 16 league matches still to be played, as well as fitting in a West of Scotland third round clash against Premiership side Benburb, Burgh’s season is being extended almost every weekend now, which is beginning to play on McKim’s mind.

“I keep updating the schedule and they keep adding Saturdays on at the end of the season,” he added. “It’s getting to the point now where my players are looking at basically no rest between this season and next.

“It’s time for the SJFA to start looking at a winter break, give guys proper time off through the winter and let them play more in the summer.

“These guys aren’t professional players and they’re not being paid a fortune to play every week, so it’s them I’m feeling sorry for – it’s looking like they won’t be having any down-time.

“Looking at the schedule now, our season has a real possibility of running right up until June. Our first competitive game after the season always tends to be the last Saturday in July.

“With that in mind and the fact that there will be a six-week pre-season, the boys are looking at a two-week break after a long season.

“I genuinely think it’s time to consider bringing in the winter break. They need to shut down over that period where games are more than likely going to be off. That gives you a bit of leeway in the summer to play with.

“I know it’s not my place to make those decisions but I really do think there has to be some sort of restructure.”
