St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has confirmed he has made the decision to send the players home for the foreseeable future.

Football has been suspended across Europe amid the coronavirus crisis and it is, as yet, unclear whether the season will resume.

Goodwin delivered the news to his players this morning to give anyone based outside of Scotland the chance to return home before any potential travel restrictions come into force.

He told Gazette Sport: “We still have a couple of boys in who have injuries. Kyle Magennis and Ryan Flynn are at an important time in their rehab, so soon after their operation, it’s vital that they get the correct physiotherapy to make sure that everything repairs properly.

"They will be in daily with the physio to make sure that gets done properly. Everybody else is off and that’s the way is going to remain for the foreseeable future.

“We have taken the decision to send our foreign players home to let them spend time with their families, because the league is not going start up anytime soon. I don’t want to have players like Ilkay Durmus, or the boys from France, Ireland or England, it’s not necessary to keep them in Paisley, while we don’t know what is happening.

“I would much rather send them home to spend time with their families and their loved ones, as opposed to sitting in a flat, on their own, with no one to talk to. I made the decision this morning because of the situation and how much it has escalated over the past couple of days.

"They are talking about a lockdown, potentially starting from the weekend, I don’t want these boys not getting to the airport and not back getting their families."

Saints have a number of players who are coming to the end of their current contract this summer.

And the Irishman  admits that many in his squad face an uncertain future as we wait to see when the next ball is kicked in Scottish football.

But Goodwin has revealed he will have talks with those members of his squad who are affected in the coming weeks.

He continued: “We’ll be talking to players in the coming weeks and see what’s happening. Then we’ll be having those individual conversations.

"There’s quite a lot of boys out of contract and there’s going to be quite a lot of lads with a bit of uncertainty, no doubt. But, we’ll have those conversations with the players.”
