Johnstone Burgh are urging the community to rally round the club ahead of a new season.

New committee members and volunteers are needed at Keanie Park to help out behind the scenes and on match days.

The Burgh squad are back in action after Covid restrictions were lifted to allow friendlies to take place.

And the club is eager to hear from anyone who is willing to help out with duties that could include anything from helping to put the nets up to taking money at the gate.

Burgh stalwart Ricky Cantwell, who is club president, match secretary and general secretary, is particularly keen to get younger people on board.

He told Gazette Sport: “I’m 68 now and not in the best of health and our treasurer Brian [Williams] isn’t in the best of health either.

“Brian is up at Keanie Park nearly every day of the week, washing strips and seeing what else needs done, but we need some younger guys to help out.

“We need people who can commit to doing certain tasks at the club. There’s no point getting people on the committee who are just going to wear a tie on a Saturday.”

Burgh have been on an upward curve under manager Jamie McKim in recent seasons but, like many other clubs, have had a tough time during the coronavirus crisis.

McKim’s squad performed well in the 2020/21 West of Scotland Football League campaign before it was brought to a premature end by the pandemic.

Now the club is hoping businesses in Renfrewshire will show their support ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Cantwell said: “We’re always looking for sponsorship. The more money we can get in, the better.

“It’s been a tough year and it can be hard to keep enthusiasm going but we’re glad to have the routine back and have the fans in.”

Burgh’s preparations for the new campaign are well underway, with a number of pre-season friendlies already played.

McKim’s men drew 0-0 with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy before easing to a 4-0 win over Irvine Victoria last Wednesday, with Paul Stewart, Jamie Sidebotham, Sean Fitzharris and Jay Keenan on target.

That result was followed by a 1-0 defeat against Cumnock Juniors.

Anyone who would like to help Burgh, either as a committee member, volunteer or sponsor, should get in touch with the club via social media or call 0771 932 3744.
