Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim was left fuming by his team’s performance as they were knocked out of the South Challenge Cup by Rossvale.

The hosts ran out 4-1 winners at Petershill Park on Friday night after taking the lead through Lewis Guy with just four minutes on the clock.

Ryan Wallace equalised for Burgh five minutes after the half-time break but it wasn’t long before Connor McAteer struck to restore Rossvale’s advantage.

Burgh were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes to go and their opponents took full advantage by adding to their tally in the closing stages, courtesy of goals from Fraser Malcolm and John Kelly.

McKim has now challenged his players to produce more consistent performances after failing to find any positives from their latest display.

He told Gazette Sport: “Out of the 90 minutes, we played for about 10 or 15. For the other 75 minutes, we were terrible.

“I can’t defend that performance or the mentality. It’s not good enough.

“I could name seven or eight players I was missing but, with the team I put out and the squad I’ve got, I expect better than that.

“We trained very light on Thursday but went through a couple of things that we wanted to implement but the players didn’t follow instructions.

“After half-time, we came out and showed a real bit of positivity for 10 to 15 minutes and got an equaliser but then we showed a real weak mentality when we went 2-1 down.

“I think some people are deciding when they want to turn up and that’s an issue for me that I need to rectify instantly. You can’t pick and choose whether you want to turn up and give it everything, you need to do it on a regular basis.”

It’s back to league action for Burgh this Saturday as they host Rutherglen Glencairn – and McKim is keen to see an immediate reaction from his players as they look to climb the First Division table.

He said: “We had them watched on Saturday and we’ll have them watched again on Wednesday when they play Neilston.

“I’m looking forward to being back at home but we need a performance and a result. Although we haven’t had an acceptable start to the season, if we put a run together, anything is possible.”

Kick-off is at 1.30pm.
