Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim welcomed Saturday’s “hard-fought” three points over Thorniewood United as his side moved joint top of the First Division.

Stuart Fyfe headed in the opener from close range before Mark Donaldson’s corner went all the way in to double his team’s lead.

The hosts pulled one back through Frazer Stobie with a stunning effort from the edge of the box but Burgh held on to make it three wins on the bounce.

McKim believes his side showed a little more quality when it counted to earn the three points and was pleased to see hours on the training pitch pay off.

Speaking to Gazette Sport, he said: “The first-half was quite close, I would say we had the most chances but they had more corners and caused us a few issues.

“We had a bit too much for them in the second-half, we were on the front foot and dominated the game which is good going because they are a good side and really well organised.

“It’s another string to your bow if you can get goals from set-pieces.

“We don’t just put the ball in the box, we are organised and know what we’re doing and there is a set-up.

“It’s something we work on regularly but you need to mix it up sometimes so you don’t become too predictable.

“I thought we looked comfortable up until they scored but they did put more pressure on us.

“We made a couple of changes to try and play on the counter and solidify the midfield. We still carried a real threat and if anyone was going to score again it would have been us.”

A top of the table clash with St Cadoc’s awaits Burgh this evening before a trip to Beechwood Park on Saturday to take on Auchinleck Talbot in the West of Scotland Football League Cup.

It’s a tricky run for the Keanie Park side but McKim is looking forward to going up against some of the best sides in the country at that level.

He explained: “Wednesday is just another game for us – it’s only the start of December so nothing is going to be won or lost.

“It’s great to be joint top of the table but it means nothing just now.

“It’s a tough week for us and it doesn’t come much harder but this is why you’re involved, if you can’t enjoy weeks like this and games like the ones we have coming up then you’re in the wrong sport.

“We’ve had three league wins on the bounce so we’ll go into Wednesday with confidence and look forward to Saturday after that.”
